Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez Opens Final State-Run DMV Northside Office, Marking Completion of Historic One-Year Transition

Miami-Dade County reached a historic milestone this week as Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez marked the opening of the final formerly state-run DMV location, the Northside office, now operating under the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office. With this opening, Miami-Dade becomes the first large jurisdiction in Florida to complete the full transition of all 11 state-run DMV offices in just one year.
The completion of this transition represents one of the most significant operational achievements in recent county history. In less than twelve months, the Tax Collector’s Office assumed responsibility for every state-operated DMV location in Miami-Dade, bringing driver license and motor vehicle services under local management for the first time.
The Northside office opening marks the final step in a countywide effort to modernize DMV services, expand access, and improve accountability. By placing these operations under local oversight, the Tax Collector’s Office has focused on making services more accessible, consistent, and responsive to the needs of residents across all communities.
“Completing the transition of all state-run DMV locations in just one year required focus, coordination, and a deep belief that government can work better for the people it serves,” said Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “I am grateful to our team and to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for their cooperation and support as we assumed full local responsibility for these operations. This effort was about expanding access to essential services and bringing government closer to the people. It was about dignity, fairness, and opportunity, ensuring that every resident can access public services efficiently, locally, and with confidence.”
Under Fernandez’s leadership, the transition has strengthened service delivery countywide by placing critical driver license and motor vehicle services under local control, improving responsiveness to community needs, and establishing consistent service standards across all locations.
Local elected officials, community leaders, and members of the media are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of the Northside office and the completion of this unprecedented countywide transition. The event will recognize the public servants whose work made it possible and mark a new chapter in how Miami-Dade delivers essential DMV services.
With the transition now complete, Miami-Dade moves forward with a locally managed DMV system focused on access, accountability, and service that meets residents where they are.
