Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez Joins Camillus House for Thanksgiving Day of Service

For the 65th year, Camillus House opened its doors on Thanksgiving morning to serve hundreds of Miami’s most vulnerable residents — and this year, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, his family, and members of his staff were among the volunteers helping make the day possible.
The Thanksgiving Day of Service is a long-standing tradition led by Camillus House and the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, bringing together community members, faith leaders, and volunteers to prepare and serve warm meals to those who need them most. The event is a reminder of the dignity every person deserves and the impact that simple acts of service can have on an entire community.
“Being alongside Camillus House and the Order of St. John of God, and seeing how they care for those who have the least, reaffirmed why compassion, dignity, and humanity must guide everything we do,” said Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “Days like today lift the spirit and strengthen the commitment to keep helping, keep showing up, and keep serving our community with love.”
Throughout the morning, volunteers prepared and served meals, assisted guests, and helped create a welcoming environment where every person felt respected and valued. For Fernandez, the opportunity to spend the holiday serving alongside his family and staff held special meaning, reflecting the values of gratitude, kindness, and community that the day represents.
The Tax Collector’s Office continues to support local organizations whose work uplifts Miami-Dade residents year-round. Camillus House remains one of the county’s most important partners in providing shelter, meals, and support to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Thanksgiving at Camillus House once again highlighted what service is meant to be, people coming together, offering their time and heart, and helping ensure no one is forgotten during the holidays.
