Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez met this morning with Mike Hammer, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the United States for Cuba, in a productive and meaningful meeting focused on the ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy for the Cuban people.

During the meeting, Tax Collector Fernandez expressed his appreciation for the continued efforts of the United States to hold the tyrannical and repressive Cuban regime accountable. He emphasized the need to confront a dictatorship responsible for decades of political persecution, imprisonment, and the silencing of dissent, while standing firmly with the Cuban people who continue to risk their lives in the fight for freedom, human rights, and democratic change. The conversation underscored the importance of decisive leadership, clear policy, and unwavering support for a free Cuba.

“I want to thank Chargé d’Affaires Hammer for his leadership and dedication, as well as President Donald J. Trump for the work his administration has done to confront the Cuban dictatorship and support the Cuban people’s rightful demand for freedom,” said Fernandez. “These efforts matter, especially to the many Cuban families here in Miami-Dade who know firsthand the cost of tyranny.”

As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, Fernandez reaffirmed his commitment to standing with the Cuban-American community and supporting policies that promote accountability, democracy, and respect for human rights in Cuba. He made clear that Miami-Dade will never be a safe haven for individuals or interests that support, defend, or profit from the Cuban dictatorship, while remaining a strong voice for freedom and a place where those who flee oppression are welcomed, protected, and heard.
