Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez Meets with Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez During Miami Visit

Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez met this week with former President of Colombia Álvaro Uribe Vélez during his visit to Miami. The conversation focused on issues central to both Colombia and South Florida’s Colombian community, including public safety, democratic governance, and the shared values that connect both regions.
During the meeting, Tax Collector Fernandez presented President Uribe with an Honorary Citation, recognizing his years of leadership and public service.
“President Uribe led Colombia through one of the most important periods in its recent history,” said Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “At a time of deep national difficulty, he helped strengthen institutions, restore public confidence, and reinforce the values that sustain a democratic nation.”
Fernandez noted that President Uribe’s leadership left an impact not only on Colombia, but across Latin America. “We spoke about the responsibility of public officials to protect liberty, promote stability, and ensure that citizens can trust their government. These principles guide strong countries, and they also guide our work here as we serve the Colombian community in South Florida.”
Fernandez also acknowledged Commissioner Fabio Andrade for his long-standing work on behalf of the Colombian diaspora throughout the United States. He emphasized that Andrade’s leadership has helped build meaningful connections between the Colombian community and local, state, and federal institutions.
This meeting reflects the ongoing commitment of the Office of the Tax Collector to engage with international leaders, community advocates, and the diverse populations that make up Miami-Dade County. Fernandez reaffirmed the importance of maintaining open dialogue with representatives from all communities to strengthen relationships and foster cooperation across the region.
