Vessel Registrations
Information on registration requirements, renewals, and documentation for all vessels operating on Florida waterways.
All vessels operated on Florida waterways must have a valid registration which is displayed on the vessel.
Vessels in the state of Florida fall into one of two classifications: commercial or pleasure.
If the classification of a vessel changes, the owner must complete a DHSMV form 87015. This form along with the current registration must be presented at the Tax Collector’s Office. If the current registration cannot be located, certification as to why the original registration is not available can be completed on DHSMV form 87015. A fee of $6.25 will be charged.
If the owner of a vessel is a non-resident and is changing the vessel classification from pleasure to commercial, an additional $50.00 vessel fee is due if the vessel is not subject to a specific reciprocal agreement with another state.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: The 2025 Florida Legislature passed SB 1388 – Vessels – directing FLHSMV to issue a Florida Freedom Boater Safety inspection decal, upon the original registration, renewal, or transfer of vessel ownership. The customer must submit an attestation signifying that the vessel is deemed to have met the safety equipment carriage and use requirements.
Effective July 1, 2025 customers may request a Florida Freedom Boater Safety inspection decal by submitting completed form HSMV 87191 – Vessel Safety Equipment Attestation. All offices can begin taking decal orders immediately and FLHSMV will fulfill these requests as soon as the decals are available. FLHSMV anticipates delivery of the new decals within the next 6 to 8 weeks.
