Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez recently attended a special cultural exhibition at the Coral Gables Museum, highlighting the traditions, heritage, and strong connections that unite communities across South Florida.

The exhibit, Alfombra de Aserrín, offered a thoughtful and detailed look at a longstanding Guatemalan tradition, showcasing the artistry and cultural significance behind the vibrant sawdust carpets created during Semana Santa. Through intricate designs and rich symbolism, the exhibition brought to life a tradition that reflects faith, creativity, and generations of cultural expression.

The event brought together local leaders and international representatives, including the Consul General of Mexico, the Consul General of Guatemala, and Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago. The gathering underscored the importance of cultural exchange and the role it plays in strengthening relationships between communities both locally and globally.

“It is always meaningful to come together to celebrate the culture and traditions that define our community,” Fernandez said. “These moments remind us of the diversity and unity that make Miami-Dade County so special.”

As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, Fernandez emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that promote cultural appreciation and engagement. Cultural programs like this not only honor heritage but also create opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and connection across communities.

Fernandez expressed his appreciation to the City of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Museum, and the Consulate of Guatemala for helping bring this meaningful exhibition to the community.

The exhibition served as a powerful reminder that Miami-Dade’s strength lies in its diversity — and that by embracing and celebrating traditions from around the world, the community continues to grow stronger, more connected, and more united.
