Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez is applauding the approval of a common sense property tax reform first recommended by his office that will eliminate more than 120,000 low value tax bills that cost more to process than they generate.

The measure follows a January letter from Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez to the Board of County Commissioners urging action under state law. By ending the practice of mailing and processing small bills of $30 or less, Miami-Dade taxpayers are expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in administrative costs while avoiding more than 120,000 unnecessary bills that cost more to pursue than they brought in.

“This reform started in this office with a simple principle: government should not spend more to collect a tax bill than the bill itself is worth,” said Fernandez. “We brought this recommendation forward because taxpayers deserve efficiency, common sense, and respect for their money. Residents should not be dragged through a collection process over minuscule bills that make no fiscal sense to chase.”

Fernandez thanked Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis for sponsoring the item and helping move it to passage.

“I appreciate Commissioner Milian Orbis for taking this recommendation and helping move it across the finish line,” Fernandez said. “This is the kind of reform residents expect from government. Identify waste, fix it, and put taxpayers first.”
