Miami-Dade Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez Receives MLK Defender of the Dream Award During Black History Month Celebration

In celebration of Black History Month, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez was honored to receive the Defender of the Dream Award from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festivities Committee — a recognition that highlights service, leadership, and a commitment to the principles of justice and equality championed by Dr. King.
The award carries special meaning for Fernandez in his role as Tax Collector, where public service is at the core of daily work. Dr. King’s words — “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve” — continue to guide leaders across generations and remain central to Fernandez’s approach to government.
“As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, this recognition reminds me that leadership is not about titles, but about service,” Fernandez said. “It is about lifting others, protecting opportunity, and standing firmly for justice and dignity in our community.”
The ceremony celebrated individuals who embody the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy through action and community impact. For Fernandez, the award reinforces the responsibility to serve every resident of Miami-Dade County with fairness, respect, and compassion — regardless of background or circumstance.
He expressed gratitude to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festivities Committee for the honor and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the Tax Collector’s Office remains accessible, accountable, and centered on the people it serves.
The recognition stands as a reminder that public service, when rooted in integrity and dedication, strengthens communities and advances the values of equality, dignity, and opportunity that Dr. King so powerfully championed.
