The Miami-Dade County Office of the Tax Collector marked a historic milestone with the first-ever lighting of a menorah at its Downtown Miami office, establishing a new annual tradition during Hanukkah.

The ceremony brought together employees, community members, and invited guests to observe the holiday and reflect on its central themes of perseverance, faith, and hope. While simple in format, the event underscored the importance of acknowledging the traditions and values that are meaningful to the diverse communities served by the Tax Collector’s Office.

“It was important to me to recognize this moment and begin a tradition that reflects respect for the people we serve,” said Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez. “This was about acknowledging faith, honoring tradition, and bringing people together in a respectful and meaningful way.”

Fernandez thanked Rabbi Yossi Harlig for leading the ceremony and explaining the significance of Hanukkah, as well as Ariel Roman-Harris from the Consulate of Israel for joining the occasion and sharing in the celebration.

The menorah lighting served as a reminder that public institutions can pause, even briefly, to recognize moments that matter to the communities they serve. As the candles were lit, the message of Hanukkah was clear: light endures, even in difficult times.

The Tax Collector’s Office plans to continue this tradition in the years ahead as part of its commitment to respect, recognition, and service to all residents of Miami-Dade County.
